Ettchi Werner – Nyiri, Sculptor
Etchi Werner-Nyiri was born in Slovakia and grew up in Tel-Aviv, where she continues to live and work. A graduate of the Basis School of Sculpture, Etchi has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Israel, the United States and Europe, as well as in domestic and international Artistic Medal exhibitions.
"My sculptures are inspired by my inner world from which I look out and observe people, their behavior, character, and philosophical thoughts concerning the meaning of life and death at the end of the 'road'. My sister's fatal illness led me to confront these subjects. I watched her body degrade, but throughout her illness there remained a vibrant soul and spirit within"
"These observations led me to understand that all of us have a soul that is captured within our body and a spirit that has its own life which is built on our individual experiences. Yet, these experiences create a kind of 'jail'. Prison has a double meaning in my work; a spiritual cage which is formed by our culture, standards, expectations and other internal and external influences. The bars of the physical cage, define our body".
"However, the subject is always about confinement =loss of freedom. To express these ideas I use symbols – birds with no wings become a metaphor for the loss of our spiritual freedom – as well as a variety of techniques. In some of my sculptures, often
built like cages, the inner imprisoned space is of equal importance to the exterior surrounding space".
My preoccupation with complex subjects is also expressed through the rough surface and broken structure of my work".
Etchi's sculptures are built in wax and overcast with bronze or aluminum.
